And now, three fun facts about Lapis Lazuli!
1. The name Lapis Lazuli is rather unique in the world of gemstones as each word comes from a different language. Lapis is Latin for ‘stone’ while Lazuli comes from the Persian word for ‘blue’.
2. All mines eventually run dry. For instance, a 350-foot-deep mine with 100 metric tons of ore will go dry in approximately 20 years. The Lapis mines of Afghanistan have the record for longevity by a huge margin. They have been mining Lapis Lazuli commercially from those mines for over 2700 years. The non-commercial mining of Lapis from those same mines actually began 3500 years earlier!
3. Ground into fine powder, Lapis was used to make rich blue pigments for paint and was a favorite of the master Michelangelo.
IF YOU ARE NEW TO THE WORLD OF CRYSTALS - PLEASE READ:
We enthusiastically encourage everyone to do their own research including what Sunny calls, ‘an intuitive interview’ with all your crystals. Just as every person has things that make them unique, so too does every crystal. All humans and all Lapis Lazuli crystals have things in common, but they are all individuals as well. Sit with them, be with them – and create an individualized relationship with your crystals. We’re going to offer really brief descriptions or thoughts about the crystal in each listing but please risk trusting us on this: You already have everything you need to know everything there is about your crystal inside of you. Trust yourself! (please)
Lapis Lazuli is a crystal of intuition, truth and wisdom. In fact, it is sometimes called The Stone of Wisdom or referred to as a ‘wisdom keeper’. Though associated with the third eye chakra, it also balances the throat chakra. A favorite of royalty throughout human history, it represents Venus the goddess of love. While Lapis has a never-ending list of attributes, they combine in a way that we feel makes them greater than the sum of its parts. Lapis is believed to help people to cut through their indecisiveness by allowing them to see the situation clearly and from a place of wisdom. The most transformative aspect of Lapis is, in our opinion, a strengthening of confidence in one’s own vision. If you find yourself following someone else’s lead rather than your own – and especially if this pattern takes you to places you’d rather not be – Lapis might be just what the doctor ordered.
And now, a few things we think you may wish to know:
1. If you are looking for a guru, put a blindfold on and see.
2. Please feel free to bring any requests you might have for that crystal you just can’t seem to find anywhere. We really do tend to jump at the opportunity to help someone but when the way to help that someone is to go on an actual real-life treasure hunt? Yup, yup, yup! Sign us up!
3. Regarding our photos: We are brand new to photography. All our photos are taken with an Android phone that has a non-working flash. We take all of our photos in a lightbox and then convert them to high definition to compensate for this. Our crystals are all photographed dry – never wet. Lastly, all our photographic efforts are to designed to represent our products as honestly as we can.
4. All sizes/weights are estimates that are made in good faith. Lengths are calculated by measuring the longest side.
5. Before an order is shipped it sits on our alter during our thirty-minute morning meditation during which we dedicate Metta to the order heading to you. If for any reason, or even no reason, you would prefer we don’t do this with your order, please let us know so we can respect your wishes.
6. In every way that matters, we are all brothers and sisters awaiting the family reunion. Until then, if no one has told you they love you today, know that we do.
If you have ANY questions, requests, suggestions, etc., please do not hesitate to message us.
Grading Information:
All our graded products will include this section at the end of the listing. It will not change. You’ve no doubt seen Premium Grade, First Quality, A/B Grade, Good to Very Good, etc., etc. There is no end of grading systems out there – and no consistency. We would like to make things easier when you visit us so here is the grading system you’ll find here:
Special Quality: Best of the best. The next step up is faceted gemstones.
AAA-Grade: Also known as Extra Quality/
AA-Grade:
A-Grade:
AB-Grade:
B-Grade:
Although we don’t carry anything below this category, there are other categories including C-Grade and D-Grade. You might also see someone talking about a Mine Run. A Mine Run is unsorted product of mixed quality. That description, while accurate, is misleading. Here’s why: Let’s pretend that you are the mine fore-person. You are looking at unsorted amethyst and most of it is an incredibly deep purple that was almost blinding in its intensity. You’re probably not going to decide to bundle that up as ‘mine run’ are you? You’ll probably take the time to sort it, right? So, even though material labelled ‘mine run’ is mixed quality, it usually consists of a lower quality mix. Likewise with material graded AB. If there were more A-Grade specimens than B-Grade specimens, most folks would sort it rather than slap an AB grade on it.
It would be unethical of us to share wholesale pricing for specific products, but we want to offer two examples taken from the pricelist of one of our favorite wholesalers. First, an inexpensive crystal that they sell in four different grades.
B-Grade: $6.00 per pound
A-Grade: $8.50 per pound
AA-Grade: $14.00 per pound
AAA-Grade: $20.00 per pound
A-grade costs 42% more than B-Grade. AA-grade costs 233% more than B-Grade. AAA-Grade costs 333% more than B-Grade. Here’s one more example from a more expensive crystal that the same wholesaler sells in three grades.
B-Grade: $43.50/lb.
A-Grade: $72.25/lb.
AAA-Grade: $110.00/lb.
We added these examples hoping that you’d see how much of a price variation can occur between grades even with the same seller. The choice of what grade you buy is completely up to you – but we hope we’ve demystified the grading system somewhat.
At the very bottom of this page, we discuss grading. Unless otherwise noted, our tumbled sizes are always what are referred to in the industry as #3 size. Many also call them ‘Medium’ although that designation is sometimes used by some folks more subjectively. Number 3 size are defined as being between 15-25mm or 5/8”-1”.
